Betty's Southern Coconut Cream Pie

heaping ½ cup sugar (Use a heaping ½ cup sugar if you are using sweetened coconut, ¾ cup sugar if you are using unsweetened coconut.)
¼ cup plus 2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 egg yolks, beaten
3 cups milk
1 ½ tablespoons butter
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
½ cup sweetened flaked coconut
1 baked 9-inch pie crust
¾ cup whipping cream
1/3 cup confectioner’s sugar (This is the same as powdered sugar or icing sugar.)
¼ cup toasted coconut
